Check-ups with Your Diabetologist – Why They Matter to YOU

25/09/2025

Life with type 1 diabetes isn’t easy. Every day we count carbohydrates, monitor insulin, track glucose… But there’s another crucial part of self-care – regular check-ups with your diabetologist.

Sometimes these visits may feel like a formality, as if the same tests and questions just keep repeating. But the truth is different: it’s during these appointments that things are discovered which you could never notice on your own.

Screening for complications includes tests that detect problems early and give us a chance to prevent the worst:

  • ACR and kidney function – protect against kidney failure.
  • Fundus exam – safeguards vision and reveals the first signs of retinopathy.
  • Feet and polyneuropathy check – prevent dangerous wounds and amputations.
  • TSH – detects thyroid disorders common in type 1 diabetes.

These aren’t just numbers and lab results. They are your eyes, your feet, your kidneys, and your heart.

Diabetologist Ivana:
“A few days ago we admitted a young patient with type 1 diabetes to the ER because of an abscess—a pus-filled infection that can have serious consequences. She hadn’t seen a diabetologist since 2022. This is exactly why we stress how important regular check-ups are! They can prevent such complications and protect health.”

😔 The biggest problem is that those with poorer control, the ones at highest risk, are often the very people who skip their appointments. Maybe out of fear of the results, maybe from diabetes burnout. Yet they are the ones who need these visits the most.

A diabetologist appointment is not a criticism, but an opportunity. It’s a conversation, support, and a chance to stop complications while there’s still time.

👉 If you haven’t had a check-up in a long time, call and schedule one. It’s a gift you give to yourself.
👉 If you already go regularly, keep it up. Your effort protects your future.

Don’t wait for problems to appear!

Your diabetologist is there to guide you on your journey—but the first step is yours. 💙
