Alpha-Lipoic Acid – I Never Thought a Small Capsule Could Change My Everyday Life

03/05/2026

I am 59 years old, and I have been living with diabetes since I was 18. I am used to check-ups, glucose monitoring, and insulin. But what comes with the passing years is something you can never fully prepare for.

I work as a secretary, so I spend most of my day sitting, with only short walks around the office. Nothing especially demanding. Still, my body slowly started sending signals that something was not right.

The problems started gradually

At first, I noticed mild cramps in my legs. I ignored them, as many of us do. I kept telling myself they would pass.

But the situation did not improve. On the contrary, over time, the cramps appeared in my hands as well. They became so unpleasant that, for the first time, I became seriously worried about how this could affect my work and my everyday life.

A possible solution appeared 🙂

My neurologist at the Vuk Vrhovac Clinic recommended alpha-lipoic acid tablets — 600 mg per day. At first, I did not expect much. But the changes surprised me.

Through conversations with people who also struggle with diabetes, as well as with experts in the field, I learned that i had to give it a shot too. After about three months of taking it regularly, my symptoms slowly began to disappear. First in my hands, then in my legs.

Then I realized that, for the first time in a long time, I was living without cramps, without twitching, and without fear. I still take it today — not because I have to, but because I want to maintain that feeling of a normal, balanced day.

I must also admit that I partly owe my good health to my dog, Bela. Thanks to her, I walk much more, which is certainly beneficial for both blood sugar control and circulation. Bela gets me outside even when I do not feel like going, and that extra movement is important for everyone living with diabetes. 🙂

Conclusion

If you are struggling with tingling, cramps, or unexplained pain, do not just wait for it to go away on its own. Alpha-lipoic acid helped me regain confidence in my own body.

Maybe it can help you too — because diabetes is something we have to live with for a long time. 🙂
