Barbie launches its first doll with type 1 diabetes

20/03/2026

Mattel has introduced its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes, marking a new step in the brand’s push for greater inclusion and representation.

The doll comes with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump — two medical devices commonly used by people living with type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition in which the body produces little or no insulin.

“Introducing a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation,” said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls. “Barbie helps shape children’s early perception of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like type 1 diabetes, we allow more children to see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.”

Mattel partnered with the nonprofit organisation Breakthrough T1D to design and develop the doll, which is part of the Barbie Fashionistas line. According to the company, Barbie’s CGM is held in place with a heart-shaped medical patch in signature Barbie pink and paired with a toy phone displaying a blood sugar tracking app. She also wears an insulin pump attached at the waist.

The doll is dressed in a blue outfit featuring polka dots and circular patterns, a nod to the global symbol for diabetes awareness. It also comes with a pastel blue handbag, intended to hold snacks or other type 1 diabetes essentials.

“We were thrilled when Barbie approached us to collaborate on the development of a doll with type 1 diabetes,” said Aaron J. Kowalski, CEO of Breakthrough T1D. “I’ve lived with T1D since I was 13, and my brother since he was 3, so this partnership is deeply personal. It means a great deal to us to help raise visibility for a condition that affects so many families. We’re honoured to work with a brand that shares our commitment to showing children that life with type 1 diabetes can be full, vibrant and empowering.”

Alongside the new release, Barbie is also launching two additional dolls inspired by Peloton instructor Robin Arzón in the United States and model Lila Moss in the United Kingdom. Both are well-known advocates for people living with type 1 diabetes.

“After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes ten years ago, I found purpose in advocating for others with similar experiences and educating people, because knowledge is power — especially for young minds,” Arzón said. “It’s a huge honour to have my own Barbie doll as part of the brand’s efforts to raise awareness and increase representation of people with type 1 diabetes. It shows children that challenges can become motivation to keep moving forward and pursue their dreams.”

Lila Moss said she was “proud” to use her platform to educate others about type 1 diabetes and added that “being different can be cool.”

“Getting messages from people who see my patches and feel represented means everything to me,” Moss said. “Now seeing Barbie dolls with type 1 diabetes, and having a doll that even looks like me, patches and all, feels truly surreal and incredibly special.”

The Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes is now available through Mattel’s online store.
