New Libre Study and Hypoglycemia - news from Amsterdam

09/11/2025

At the recent ATTD 2025 conference in Amsterdam, new data was presented confirming the high quality of the FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system.

One of the most important findings of the research is that FreeStyle Libre “better detects hypoglycemia,” which is extremely important for the safety of people with diabetes.

Abbott’s booth was traditionally large, well-designed, and very well-attended. The crowd at the booth was not only drawn by the interesting information but also by the excellent coffee, which is expected from major players who want to inform as wide a population as possible, while ensuring that they feel good in the process 😊

Why is it important to recognize hypoglycemia early?

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can be a serious and potentially dangerous condition. If not recognized in time, it can lead to dizziness, confusion, weakness, fainting, and in severe cases, seizures or coma. People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who use insulin are especially sensitive to hypoglycemic episodes, and those who have experienced them often develop a fear of low blood sugar.

Because of this fear, many of us deliberately keep our blood sugar levels higher than they should be. Unfortunately, this practice of maintaining higher blood sugar levels over the long term leads to poorer diabetes management, increased risk of complications such as vision, kidney, and nerve damage, and also increases the chances of developing heart disease and stroke.

How does FreeStyle Libre help?

First and foremost, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus system measures glucose every minute, making it easier to quickly detect a drop in blood sugar or hypoglycemia. It now lasts 15 days and is approved for children as young as 4 years old.

The information from the study presented at ATTD 2025 includes:

Faster response to hypoglycemia – Users can take immediate action to prevent a drop in blood sugar.
More reliable detection – FreeStyle Libre detects low blood sugar values more accurately compared to other CGM devices.
Reduced fear of hypoglycemia – Thanks to continuous monitoring, users have a better insight into glucose trends and can prevent sudden drops.
Improved diabetes management – More accurate monitoring reduces the need to keep blood sugar levels higher out of fear of hypoglycemia.

The new iCGM standard

There was a lot of discussion at the conference about the new U.S. iCGM standard for continuous glucose monitoring, which the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus meets, and which may also come to Europe. This standard introduces stricter requirements for measurement accuracy, ensures better connectivity with other devices, such as insulin pumps and smart apps. This means that Libre can automatically send data and work more precisely with insulin dosing algorithms (closed loop), which improves blood sugar management and reduces the need for manual checks.

One of the sensors that can be connected to OmniPod 5 is also the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus

In conclusion, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus system enhances diabetes management by providing faster, more accurate hypoglycemia detection and better overall blood sugar control. Its continuous monitoring and iCGM compatibility offer improved safety and efficiency for users.
